Itinerary

1
Day 1-Take the train from Delhi to Ranthambore National Park

An early start this morning as you'll be met by our representative and transferred to the railway station for your journey to Sawai Madhopur, the closest train station to the national park . Travelling on an Indian train is a great experience and provides an opportunity to sample a real slice of India as you join local people on board. Founded in the mid-nineteenth century, the railway system in India is a lifeline for the country's vast population with up to 20 million people travelling by train every day. You will travel in comfortable second-class air-conditioned carriage and the journey takes approximately five hours. On arrival in Sawai Madhopur, you will be met for a short drive to your hotel. Set in large gardens that border the park, the hotel is only 15 minutes' drive from the entrance. There is a swimming pool and Auyervedic Spa to enjoy while not on safari, and all your meals are included and taken in the 'Indian Spice' restaurant which serves a variety of cuisines including North Indian, Chinese and Continental. Many of the ingredients used are picked fresh from the hotel's own kitchen garden. After checking in it's off on your first safari, exploring the rocky landscape of Ranthambore National Park. Each safari lasts around three hours and will be in a shared jeep with up to six people. Although the extension is not accompanied by a tour leader, every jeep has an expert park ranger who will help you to identify the animals that you spot. Ranthambore operates a zonal system to ensure that routes do not get overcrowded with a limited number of vehicles allowed in each section of the park. Please note that this is a stand-alone extension and can be booked on any date of your choosing, subject to availability. Whilst this itinerary has been designed to complement a number of our group tours, we wish to point out that this extension is not a group experience, so you are unlikely to be travelling with other Explore customers.

Day 2-Morning and afternoon jeep safaris in Ranthambore National Park

Once the hunting reserve of the Maharaja of Jaipur, Ranthambore has a landscape of rivers, lakes and forests that nestle among steep cliffs and rocky outcrops. It was declared a wildlife sanctuary in the 1950's, although it was still used as a hunting reserve until the early 1970's when it became part of the Project Tiger, a large conservation project across the whole of India which has seen the tiger population steadily rise in Ranthambore and other tiger reserves. This morning you will embark on your first safari of the day. An early start provides you with the best chance of spotting tigers as they are more active in the cool climes of the morning, before the heat of the day forces them to take shelter. You may see them roaming among the woodlands and cooling off in the lakes and possibly even on the hunt. Aside from the tigers, Ranthambore is home to sloth bear, langur, striped hyena, marsh crocodile, python and Ganga soft-shelled turtle. It is also a haven for birdlife, and sightings of eagles, wagtails and white-breasted kingfisher are common. After your morning safari, you will return to your hotel for lunch and to spend a few hours relaxing before venturing out again in the afternoon for another opportunity to spot the wildlife.

Loved this trip and so lucky to be in India to play Holi! The Taj Mahal really is as incredible as everyone says, and if you can add on the Ranthambore extension to see tigers, bears, birds and incredible landscape then it's amazing! Loved Delhi, Jaipur and Agra and the train journey was a great experience. I would definitely go again!

Absolutely loved my 3 safaris looking for tigers. And the very first one we saw a tiger, Sethi, a female who was a little shy. Second safari saw a few paw prints on the road and hear tigers roaring. Third safari was incredible, one just walked across the road in front of us, amazing. We kept returning to a lake where the ranger kept saying it’s a great place for spotting tigers, and boy was he right. One tiger just strolled on by, a couple of minutes later another one just walked along the same route. Then, a few more minutes and a 3rd! What a great end to a fantastic holiday.

After the palaces of Rajasthan, the rustic accommodations in Ranthambore were a little disappointing—however the staff was great and the reports from other visitors staying in different hotels indicated that most of the accommodations in the area were similar. The jeep safaris were quite crowded and as we were the last to board left little room. Again, the guides were helpful and shifted seats so that my wife got enough room. I enjoyed all the wildlife and though tigers were not present for most of the excursions, we did get to see one at the end. Explore! had tour leaders and drivers to get us back and forth to the train and they were quite conscientious about getting us to places on time.

This was an exciting extension to our Rajasthan tour as both a leopard and a tiger were spotted on our safaris. There is no guarantee of this of course, so it's also worth noting that the hotel where we stayed was a beautiful, tranquil place and that the safari park itself is fascinating. The jeep rides were often quite wild, so definitely an experience! Our guide in Ranthambore was excellent, and Paul Nathan, our guide for getting to and from Ranthambore and Delhi was truly wonderful - kind, good humoured, and exceptionally well organised. The only negative point was the hotel in Delhi at the end of the trip. It clearly catered for business travellers in terms of location and facilities and it was not possible to do any sightseeing, or even find a decent restaurant, from there. Maybe Explore could rethink this one, but apart from that, a great trip.

The trip was excellent. We saw numerous tigers It should be noted that the safari trips are over very bumpy and dusty track. They are not suitable for people with back problems.

Lovely place to visit but don’t expect to see tigers. I was lucky to see one for about a minute at the end of one of 3 trips out. You don’t get told or choose (ok) where you go- there are many zones and I was taken to the same zone twice - would have been good to go to another with maybe a better chance. There are also deer, monkeys and peacocks which I saw , and leopards (didn’t). So you take your chances!
